Saragai Hisako - 皿谷緋佐子

October 11, 2020

Kumano-yaki is a traditionally famous local kiln in Kumano district, Fukuyama city, Hiroshima province. This chawan was created by a female potter Saragai Hisako (皿谷緋佐子). The look of the bowl is pretty interesting: it has pink gohon dots as we can see on the Hagi bowls and at the same time the stamped floral decorations of this chawan are similar to the Mishima ceramics. These nuances make a unique bowl that is hard to find, especially if we take into account the age of the potter, who was born in 1930. The potter's seal 緋 is stamped in the bottom part of the bowl.
