Daihoji-yaki - 大宝寺
December 11, 2018Daihoji-yaki is a practical pottery that was produced in Tsuruoka from the end of the Edo period. A document on the pottery of 1825 (Bunsei 8) remained in the house where the local ware was made and it is considered that it was originated this time. The kilns were located in two places, Daihoji Town and Shin Town of Tsuruoka, and this type of ceramics is also called Shinmachi Yaki. The potters use the clay taken from the suburbs, where the soil is thick and heavy. The information sounds like production of this type of pottery ceased for some time. But as I can see, Daihoji-yaki is still in game an the potters of Daihoji, Shin and Tsuruoka make beautiful pieces.
